  • Over the last 20 years I have had the good fortune to have been a apart O2 Sales team, and progressed quickly through the ranks into leadership positions, working in the B2B division. Winning six figure deals, creating and leading winning teams, responsible for annual recurring revenues of over £20m.

    But in another life, I was a chef! In 2004 I was in the fortunate position of being able to go back to university and needed a part time position - I joined the O2 Consumer retentions team with no idea of how to sell anything - and more, I joined the O2 Sales academy. Probably a more important learning journey than my degree!

    Anyone who has been through the O2 academy would agree it was world class, and primarily it wasn't just about convincing to exchange money for goods - It was a lesson in psychology and inescapable logic. It answered questions like, Why do people buy? What is value? How do you discover, illustrate and reenforce what value means to the individual.

    In todays testing trading environment, where money for resources is short, sales people don't get that level of education. Some get by on shear luck, some on good lucks and charm, and some fail! Often, onboarding includes some system and product training, and off you go. A recipe for at worst failure, at best an laboured struggle to target; even then, often that takes too long for a small business to sustain, and the recruitment cycle starts again.
